Become a Youth Leader with Rotary

If you are a current high school sophomore or junior interested in developing your leadership skills in a beautiful setting this summer, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program (RYLA) might be just the thing for you. The deadline to apply is usually around April 30th, but is determined by each Rotary Club. Check with your local Rotary Club and complete your application early!

Available to students residing in Rotary Districts 5450 (essentially metro Denver, reaching from Longmont in the north to Castle Rock in the south and from Summit CO to the Eastern Plains) and 5440 (Wyoming and Western Nebraska), RYLA is a 5-day leadership conference held at the YMCA of the Rockies, in Estes Park, Colorado.

The objectives of RYLA are:

  • To encourage and assist youth leaders and potential leaders in methods of responsible and effective leadership by providing them with a training experience.
  • To encourage continued and stronger leadership of youth by youth
  • To publicly recognize the outstanding qualities of many young people who are rendering service to their schools and communities as leader

Brian Winstanley, a senior at Denver East High School and a past RYLA participant, describes his experience this way: “In a day and age where students are pushed to love to learn, RYLA helped me learn to love myself, my community and my world. RYLA is much more than a leadership conference. It is a conference that reminded me of the power of networking with others, taking action and leading a passionate life in a compassionate manner.”

Who is eligible?

Any high school sophomore or junior prior to the summer conference may apply. Generally, the applicants who are selected have excelled in one or more areas of high school involvement and have proven leadership experience or potential. Applicants must be able to attend the entire 5 day conference.

Dates: July 20-July 25, 2014.
